February 20, 2002-9:25 p.m.

Today I went for my annual routine mammogram (pronounced mammio-gram in some circles). I had to go to the hospital near me to have it done. The town is relatively small and somewhat backwoods but I was still a little surprised at some of the things I saw there.

While I was waiting to register, I noticed that they had quite a few potted poinsettias scattered about on tables in the waiting room. I just thought that it was odd that they would still have them around so long after the holidays and some of them actually seemed to be thriving.

When my name was called to register, I was escorted to a room about the size of a closet. A desk separated this room from the office beyond. I was greeted by Annette who had all sorts of knickknacks about including a potted plant with a jack-o-lantern on a stick poking out of it.

I was then sent over to Diagnostic Imaging, which was still dark despite the fact that my appointment had been scheduled for fifteen minutes earlier. Someone came and opened up the waiting room a few moments later.

While I was waiting for them to call my name, I started looking about the waiting room. The wallpaper was a light gray color with teal and maroon accents. There were several framed prints obviously done by the same artist. Not only was the style of rendering the same despite the change of setting but all of the trees in all of the prints had pink leaves.

I noticed that centered above each chair there was a slightly dingy, brownish spot on the wall. After studying this phenomenon for a few moments, I realized that those spots were caused by people waiting with their heads against the wall.

So much for the sterility of the hospital environment!
