January 09, 2003-7:38 p.m.

I got up this morning and read this story about some people unfortunate enough to have been pulled over by police in Cookeville, Tennessee.

If it wasnt bad enough that they were pulled over for erroneous reasons, the police herded the family to the front of the car, had them kneel and handcuffed them. This in and of itself would have been a harrowing enough experience but the family begged the police to close the doors of their car so that their two dogs would not escape.

The police ignored their pleas. The familys dog, Patton, got out of the car and headed towards the interstate. The family yelled at him and as the dog headed towards the family with his tail wagging an officer raised his shotgun and killed the dog.

The chief of police is quoted as saying, "It is never gratifying to have to put an animal down, especially a family pet, and the officer assures me that he never displayed any satisfaction in doing so."

WTF?

If hed closed the car door like the family asked, the dog wouldnt have been loose and it doesnt sound to me like circumstances warranted putting the dog down. If the dog had gone for him he could have fought him off using the rifle as a club without killing the dog.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
