September 11, 2002-8:39 p.m.

The plan, as stated in the email sent out earlier this week detailing todays events, was to have a two-minute period of silence starting at 8:46am to commemorate the events of this day last year.

The action on the other hand. . .

This morning at approximately 8:36am (by the clock on my desk phone) an announcement was made that in a few minutes we would be asked to observe a two-minute period of silence. At 8:42am (again by the clock on my phone) an announcement was made that the period of silence would commence now.

One of the supervisors has her desk right behind me and shes kind of loud so I can hear a lot of what goes on over there. During the moment(s) of silence, someone came to her desk and started talking.

Non-observer: Hello

Supervisor: ~maintains her silence~

Non-observer: Blah blah blah, blab blab blab. . . .

Supervisor: ~trying to whisper~ Um. Were having a moment of silence . . . .

Not even ten seconds later, the director pages someone over the intercom.

Supervisor to director: Um, were having a moment of silence. . .

Suffice to say, by then Sa was not maintaining a moment of silence.

Several seconds later we were thanked for our observence and our patriotism. How patriotism figured into that debacle is beyond me!
